KUALA LUMPUR – The Philippine airline, Philippine Airlines, is confident that the Kuala Lumpur – Guam route will boost the tourism industry and strengthen Manila’s position as the main entry point to the United States (US) island.

Philippine Airlines said that because the route has a daily stop in Manila and a direct connection to Guam, it is able to strengthen economic, social and tourist ties between Malaysia, the Philippines and Guam and open up new opportunities for the development of the tourism industry in the region.

“The Kuala Lumpur – Guam route also expands the tourist network by allowing Malaysians and Filipinos to travel more easily and frequently as well as increasing trade and commerce activities through smoother travel conveniences.

“Apart from that, we want to support the community of Filipinos and Malaysians who are interested in the Philippines and Guam destinations and promote cultural exchange and cross-border tourism which can improve the economies of both countries.

“This route will also open up opportunities for investment and new economic cooperation, especially in the service, tourism and trade sectors between the three destinations,” he said in a statement.

Recently, Philippine Airlines flew as many as 23 tourist agencies and 14 local media representatives to Guam as a promotional event in collaboration with the Guam Tourism Bureau to promote and expand tourism to the island.

Meanwhile, Assistant Vice President – Sales Manager, Philippine Airlines, Gene Pauline Banzon also believes that this route will be able to position Guam as a new destination for the Malaysian market in addition to making the lighting company the main choice for all destinations.

“Flights to Guam with Philippine Airlines from KLIA will transit in Manila before connecting directly to Guam where passengers can choose between business and economy class flights,” she said. In conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur – Guam flight, the airline is offering a special ticket offer as low as RM1,950.00 excluding excise.

The route from Kuala Lumpur to Manila has been operating since June 2017 while the route from Manila to Guam has also been in existence since the 1990s with Philippine Airlines operating several flights a week. Starting October 26, 2014, Philippine Airlines upgraded its Manila–Guam route to a daily non-stop flight.

Meanwhile, Guam is a US territory that has several unique features by offering a popular tourist destination with beautiful beaches, diving spots and historical attractions. It is a strategic island in the Pacific Ocean known for its US military base and defense interests including Andersen Air Force Base and Apra Harbor Naval Base.

Apart from that, Guam is also rich in Chamorro culture, namely the island’s indigenous people who have a unique culture and language as part of the island’s identity, playing an important role in the history of the Second World War when it was colonized by Japan. The current population of Guam is estimated at 169,000 people.
